To
Town Planning Board,
We are urging the Town Planning Board to:
1. Reject the planning application A/SK-CWBN/42 Although the application proposes to conserve the iconic administrative building, the remaining studio, which was listed as grade II historic buildings, are to be demolished. The value of the studio comes from its ability in producing a film from start to finish, which is why the entire Shaw Studio compound was listed as a Grade I historic buildings. Only keeping a small portion of the architecture while demolishing the rest would undoubtedly damage its historical meanings. Losing the completion of the Shaw studio compound would make the conserved parts an empty shell. Therefore, we are urging the the Town Planning Board to reject the application.
2. Redevelopment, restore the “Hollywood of the east” As a historic architecture, the Shaw Studios has many purposes beside residential use. Possible uses include 1) remodeling the dormitory for a hotel or short-terms stays, 2) collaborating with educational institutions, using the studio for filming production education, 3) using the studio for public exhibition, and etc. By keeping the original Shaw Studios while giving it new purposes, it could both achieve architectural conservation and restore the Hong Kong’s reputation as a “Hollywood of the East”, giving our city another unique tourist attraction, which is a win-win situation!
