Over consumption and overfishing is a hallmark of the Live Reef Food Fish Trade. Paradoxically, it is the high prices paid by consumers that enable the trade’s ongoing viability. Overexploited target species such as the Humphead Wrasse, have been fast tracked to an “endangered species” status due to high demand from diners – particularly in Hong Kong. As a means to catch fish quickly and easily, fisherman within the trade often use cyanide (a poisonous chemical compound) to stun fish hiding within coral reefs.
