The government recently introduced trash bins with “small mouths” as part of the first phase of a campaign aimed at reducing the rubbish on streets. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department hopes that the new bins will solve the problem of people placing oversized rubbish in and around the rubbish bins. However, local green groups argue that Hong Kong’s also needs stronger educational campaigns and enforcement actions to tackle the mounting waste crisis, and point to the number of rubbish bins in Hong Kong as a bigger overarching problem.
