In early August, thirteen beaches were closed after a huge palm oil spillage at sea. The government confirmed that around 1,000 tonnes of the solidified oil had spilled from a cargo ship after it collided with another vessel near the Pearl River estuary in southern China. The cargo ship carried around 9,000 tonnes of palm oil. Additional details regarding who was responsible for the spillage and a precise location of where the collision occurred were not given. Clean-up efforts have been difficult due to the large volume of oil spilled and the soft and sticky nature of palm oil.
