Fish Outta Water | Date: March 2, 2016

Mong Kok effectively went into lockdown in February 2016, only hours after the Chinese New Year began. Although hawker food is a long-standing Chinese New Year tradition in Hong Kong, the Food and Environment Hygiene Department clamped down on them this year. Crowds gathered in Mong Kok to protest the crackdown and prevented a taxi from leaving. Police engaged and the conflict shortly escalated on both sides. The police used pepper spray and police batons and fired two warning shots, whilst protestors launched bricks, threw glass bottles, and started fires. The confrontation lasted over 10 hours in total.
