EP 10

In his January 2016 policy address, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying announced his intentions of beginning the legislative process to ban the import and export of elephant hunting trophies and to explore the possibility of enacting laws to completely ban the local trade. Leung claimed that it was time to put a stop to the international community’s perceptions of Hong Kong as the center of the illegal ivory trade, which has damaged the city’s reputation. Environmental advocacy groups have applauded the government’s actions, but added that they would be more assured about the government’s commitment if they could a release a timetable for action.
