Critics of the construction of Hong Kong International Airport’s third runaway call it a white elephant project, claiming that the third runway was approved before the environmental risks for fully accounted for. HSBC, the financial adviser of the third runway, has also been criticized for supposedly neglecting the environmental impacts of the construction of the runaway, particularly since HSBC has adopted the Equator Principles, a set of guidelines that many financial institutions apply to the projects they finance in order to ensure that people nor the environment or harmed in the process.
