Description

Director of Broadcasting,

RTHK has just announced that as of 4th September, the BBC World Service radio coverage – currently 24 hours per day on 675 AM – will cease. Instead it will be replaced with the state-run China National Radio Hong Kong Edition, primarily in Mandarin, to enhance the cultural exchange between the mainland and Hong Kong. The BBC World Service will be broadcast from 11pm to 7am only.

We support such enhancement and the introduction of mainland media channels; however, we also value the BBC World Service. Our request is simple – that the BBC World Service is kept on air as it is now.

The BBC World Service is acknowledged worldwide to be one of the most comprehensive, high quality and balanced news reporting platforms available on air. Its coverage goes beyond simply reporting news, but includes informed, insightful and relevant programmes that address some the biggest issues we face globally – importantly it covers environmental issues in a way that no other local media channel does. In particular, this coverage ensures that we can keep abreast of what is happening globally on the environment as well as how this relates to Hong Kong.

Petition Letter

To Director of Broadcasting,

Following the government’s announcement that RTHK will no longer provide the BBC World Service on its 24 hour cycle, we would like to request that the government reconsider and finds a way to keep the current service.

As you know the BBC World Service is acknowledged worldwide to be one of the most comprehensive, high quality and balanced news reporting platforms available on air. Its coverage goes beyond simply reporting news, but includes informed, insightful and relevant programmes that address some of the biggest issues we face globally – importantly it covers environmental issues in a way that no other local media channel does. In particular, this coverage ensures that we can keep abreast of what is happening globally on the environment as well as how this relates to Hong Kong. We are particularly concerned on the myriad environmental challenges facing the world – as ultimately this affects us all.

We support introducing channels to enhance cultural exchange, but request that this is not at the expense of such an important media channel.

As you will see for this petition, many people agree. So, we ask the government to reconsider relegating the World Service to anti-social hours.

We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Petition Creator
