SPEAK UP FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!
Hong Kong's environmental petition platform
390 SIGNATURES OBTAINED, THIS CAMPAIGN ENDED ON August 6, 2015
Hong Kong is facing a waste crisis. Daily consumer goods, such as plastic bags, packaging materials, bottles and food containers, account for two-thirds of the waste. It is therefore clear that the squandering use of plastic products in every-day life has reached a very serious stage in Hong Kong and that a call-for-action is necessary.
Our landfill sites are almost full, the government has just funded a massive (unnecessary) incinerator, and we are about to start having to pay for our trash. We need to stop creating so much rubbish and start thinking about how our actions affect both the health of our environment and the health of our fellow citizens. As well as being single-use (read: ‘massively wasteful’), plastic wrapping leaks harmful chemicals into our food and bodies, and into the environment once it reaches landfill or the ocean/soil. Consumers are beginning to make a difference by way of BYOB (Bring Your Own Bags), but I call on large supermarket chains in Hong Kong to take a responsible, hard-hitting, future-focussed stand and stop their use of unnecessary plastics and packaging. This packaging is NOT convenient, it is wasteful. Help us bring attention to this problem and support the movement away from plastic wrapping, by asking HK’s major supermarkets owners to make this change now.
To Hutchison Whampoa Limited and Jardine Matheson Holdings,
We call on the owners and share holders of supermarket chains in Hong Kong to take a responsible, hard-hitting, future-focussed stand and commit to stopping the use of unnecessary plastics and packaging.
This packaging is NOT convenient, it is wasteful.
Hong Kong’s waste crisis needs immediate attention and solutions – this movement away from plastic wrapping would be a ground-breaking move for shareholders to vote on and bring to action. We urge decision-makers at Jardine Matheson and Hutchison Whampoa to act on this issue to help make a real and measurable difference, not only to the environment, but to the quality of life of Hong Kong’s citizens.
